Durham Wellness and Physical Education

Mott Community College's charming 1958 natatorium building underwent a renovation to convert it to a state of the art physical education center.

The new Mott Community College Durham Wellness and Physical Education Center supports the college’s Physical Education program and the Flint community.The 7,900 square foot building houses an array of fitness equipment in the original natatorium space, a dance and Pilates studio, two classrooms with Smart Technology, and support spaces.

The main acoustical challenge was to allow two simultaneous classes to be held on different sides of the large fitness center space without interfering with each other while preventing sound transmission into the classrooms and Pilates/dance studio room. We accomplished this by optimally locating sound absorbing surfaces in the space and designing sound isolating partitions, all while adhering to strict budgetary requirements.
