The Laingsburg K-12 school system, theater department, and band program desired practice and performance spaces to advance the arts in their community.
To expand the performing arts capabilities a 650-seat auditorium addition along with significant renovations to the existing music rehearsal spaces was undertaken.
The school requested an auditorium design that could accommodate band performances, unamplified drama, and amplified events. Laingsburg’s expanding band program required a fully renovated music suite reconfiguring the existing footprint into a rehearsal suite with band room, jazz band room, and small ensemble practice room. The band director requested that the renovated design reduce excessive loudness experienced in the existing band room and provide the ability to record rehearsals in each practice space.
Soundscape Engineering was brought onto the project to provide holistic acoustical design assistance, including working with the project engineers to design quiet HVAC systems and assisting the project architects and interior designers with room shaping and room finishes selections, partition designs and other constructions to control sound transmission between spaces and enhance sound transmission within spaces. All aspects of the acoustic environment were addressed including seemingly minor issues such as damping rain noise and muffling the large video projector.
