Indiana Tech’s Summit Hall is a four-story mixed-use building with retail on the street level and ninety-nine single bed rooms in the residence hall above.
The design of the hall provides multiple public spaces like study rooms and kitchens on each floor to encourage the typical dorm lifestyle. On the ground level, it was important to the University that the street level businesses, which include a convenience store, bistro, and coffee shop, create a neighborhood where students could socialize. With these types of retail and gathering spaces comes noise.
Soundscape Engineering was brough to the design team to advise with respect to isolation of the door rooms and the first level resident counselor apartment, from the first level retail spaces and to more generally address sound isolation throughout the building.
