The art deco Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, Illinois, is one of only 5 remaining ‘Egyptian’ theatres in the United States.
This 1430-seat theatre opened in 1929 with a program that was part motion picture house and part Vaudeville theatre. In the present day, the theatre is owned and operated by a non-profit organization and hosts a full schedule of community events, national touring acts, and films.
The project involved creation of front-of-house support spaces in a new addition to the building, renovation of the existing lobby spaces, and replacement of the existing, loud ventilation system with a new air-conditioning system. Soundscape provided comprehensive acoustical consulting services for the project, but the HVAC noise and vibration control was the dominant and challenging portion of the work. Since much of the existing ductwork and the air distribution tunnels were to remain, Soundscape spent time testing noise propagation through the existing air distribution system and then worked with the project architect and project mechanical engineer to review multiple design schemes and performed detailed noise control calculations.
