The DeKalb County Community Foundation (DCCF) is a non-profit organization that serves the local community with services that enhance the quality of life within DeKalb County. The 1880 Train Depot is registered in the National Register of Historic Places for its exterior, and contains a meeting space with a cathedral ceiling, which is referred to as the Freight Room.

The space can accommodate up to 75 seated and 25 standing occupants. Its uses include community meetings, presentations, and lectures. Occasionally, small music ensembles have performed in the space. The DCCF received complaints about the poor speech intelligibility during the community meetings, particularly with fewer occupants and when the amplification system was used.

To address this issue, Soundscape Engineering tested the reverberation time in the space and made recommendations for acoustical treatments that retained the historic look of the space while improving the listener experience. The function of the room has been much improved according to feedback from the users.
