With the help of Gold Medal Swimmer and Evansville native Lilly King, the new Deaconess Aquatic Center brought Olympic caliber swimming competition to Evansville, Indiana.

The 50 meter, 10-lane pool and separate diving well allows this competition and training facility to host high school and collegiate events for audiences of up to 900 spectators. Beyond the competition space, a large leisure pool for swim lessons and family fun is available to the community.

Soundscape Engineering was brought on to the design team to assist with room acoustics design in both the competition space and the leisure space.

In this type of venue, the goals of the room acoustics design are to promote speech intelligibility for the safety of those using the pools, to ease communication between coaches/instructors and the swimmers, and to create an energetic environment for spectators while still providing clear event announcement over the venue’s speech reinforcement system. To these ends, Soundscape analyzed the project design and worked with the project architect to create spaces that use sleek, modern materials while simultaneously achieving both the acoustical and visual goals.
