Calvin College
Spoelhof Fieldhouse1
Grand Rapids, Michigan

The Spoelhof Fieldhouse complex houses a 5,000-seat arena, 50-meter competition pool with seating for 500, two weight and fitness centers, in-door tennis and track facility, and a 40-foot climbing wall; all intermingled with spaces for student gathering and studying.

Soundscape Engineering firm partner Nathan Sevener provided HVAC systems noise control consulting and room acoustics consulting for all of these spaces; reviewing the design documents, performing acoustical calculations, and providing guidance to the architects and mechanical engineers as the project design progressed. The arena was a focus of the acoustical consulting effort, ensuring that the venue acoustics were suitable for multiple functions, including NCAA competition, graduation ceremonies, and concerts.
