Nathan Sevener, Soundscape Engineering LLC partner and Principal Acoustical Consultant, presented at Noise-Con 2014 in Fort Lauderdale. His presentation, entitled “Comparison of vibration levels and characteristics of cut, floated, and non-isolated floor slabs exposed to ground-borne vibration,” described...

... design and post construction vibration measurements for a recently constructed university sound and vibration research laboratory for which Soundscape Engineering LLC was the sound and vibration design consultant. A requirement to accommodate simultaneous experiments and the proximity of the lab to a public road, resulted in the design of several different slab-on-grade conditions. Consequently, portions of the floor were supported on neoprene isolators, portions were on grade but thickened and cut to separate them from the rest of the building slab, and one portion had an independent spread footing. As part of building commissioning, vibration measurements were made on these various slab segments during controlled drive-by passes (on the adjacent road) of a fully loaded dump truck. The presentation described the specifics of the slab conditions and presented the results of the vibration measurements.
